WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER AS STRAIGHT DRAMA Aug 26, 2010 This movie has received several less than good reviews, and rightfully so. While it is supposed to me a musical, the main characters (Depp and Carter) come across as lackluster singers at best, pathetic at worst. Since they are strongest in straight drama roles, the singing should have been done away with and the movie presented as a mystery thiller.

watch with the captions, read the amazing lyrics to the songs Aug 26, 2010 Not for the squeemish, Its a bloodbath. But the performances, music songs and directing , set design are mesmerizing.

YOU HAVE TO LIKE MUSICALS TO LIKE THIS ONE Aug 24, 2010 Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd which includes the music of Danny Elfman. You have to like musicals to "get" this picture. If not then you probably shouldn't bother. It's a tale of revenge, lost love and to paraphrase Tom Wolfe: You Can't Go Home Again. Depp and Carter elevate the rating of this picture. Rickman seems a bit too subdued for my tastes. MY GRADE: B to B plus; WHEN WATCHED: 08/10/2010.

What a Dissapointment :( Aug 06, 2010 Im a big fan of J. Deep when about 8 years ago or so was doing serious movies like THE NINTH GATE, BLOW, IN HELL and SLEEPY HOLLOW.
Funny enough I though this was going to be some sort of a SLEEPY HOLLOW type of movie instead is a musical. So is J DEEP meets BROADWAY sort of speak.
I literally wasted my money on this. I couldnt watch this past the first 1/2 hour. It is very bad because it had the potential to be something in the lines of SLEEPY HOLLOW and beyond. A very serious movie. Rather than that, Tim Burton whos a great director decided to do this masquerade with musical number.
Johnny Deep and some of the other actors are not singers anyway, so why waste money on people that when they sing dont crack your ribs.
I never like to give NEGATIVE feedback, but this one took the bakery for me. Sorry :(

Another awful blu-ray transfer.... Jul 30, 2010 Sweeney Todd is probably my favorite Tim Burton movie - that being said, everyone has their own opinions, and my review is mostly going to focus on the quality of the blu-ray transfer.
I have to say, I'm pretty dissapointed with this one. To me, the whole purpose of a movie being transferred to blu-ray is to make the picture and sound as good as it can possibly be, with the current technology. Sadly, there are more than a few studios who don't seem to think so.
The picture on this release should be an embarrassment to Dreamworks. While it is very detailed and sharp in some scenes, for the majority of the film, there is so much grain and digital artifacts it is ridiculous. It is mind-boggling how picture quality can vary so drastically from scene to scene on a digital disc! With most blu rays the picture tends to suffer in brighter scenes. This one is the complete opposite - any moderately dark scene (which is 90 percent of this movie) looks so grainy, and speckled you'll swear you are watching a videotape. Honestly, do some studios have an automatic mastering program that does this without a human technician to make corrections? I have to wonder how some of these transfers go out the door looking like this. I compared several scenes on blu-ray first, and then on the dvd using the same playstation 3, with the most recent firmware, on a full 1080p HDTV with v1.4HDMI cables. In all instances, the DVD actually looked better.
The one thing I can say about this release is that the sound is excellent! One of the better audio tracks I have heard - the DVD doesn't even come close to the blu-ray in that aspect.
This was a HUGE dissapointment to me, as this is one of my favorite films of recent years - I expected better for my money. Dreamworks Blu-Ray division owes Tim Burton an apology. If you are a fan, and can find this for $10 or less, buy it just for the audio and extras. If you want to upgrade the picture from the DVD, don't bother....
