5Take me out to the ball game The George Will segment  Jan 31, 2008
By Shalom Freedman "Shalom Freedman"
Will is one of America's best political columnists. He is all a baseball fan and writer. He comes to talk with Charlie Rose about a second baseball book he has written after his successful 'Working Men'. Rose asks him why 'Bunts' is in the title and Will explains that the book consists in short small bunt-like pieces which when excellently executed are one of the finest things in the game. Will talks about the American love for baseball, a game which unlike basketball does not have a continuous flow, and unlike football does not have always the whole team in action at once. Baseball is the game of interruption and therefore time for the fan to think. It is the game of the individual effort. And Will makes the point that it is also the game of failure since even those hitters with the best average will not succeed at the plate two out of three times.
The baseball part of the conversation is the best. Rose confesses he is more a basketball fan but still he knows baseball well and makes the conversation with Will pleasant.
They then move on to the Clintons and politics, and the proceedings become a bit less pleasant.
